Official @hamvention Twitter handler Jeff Davis, KE9V announced this evening via Twitter the selection of Nathan Ciufo, KA3MTT (@KA3MTT) as the winner of the pre-hamvention memories contest which solicited Hamvention memories from Hamvention attendees through the social media platform. Expressing his gratitude for all of the submissions and specifically of the selection of @KA3MTT as the winner, KE9V remarked “at Hamvention, we strive to ensure the event is an opportunity to make new friends, see old friends, and perpetuate relationships that span the years, and the radio waves; the submissions we received were a reflection of our success in this area.” As winner of the Hamvention Memories contest on twitter, Ciufo will receive two complimentary tickets to Hamvention 2016.

KA3MTT’s submission read:KA3MTT“My favorite Hamvention story was my FIRST trip to the convention. It was 1985 and I was 12 years old. My Uncle Chuck, K3YUH (SK) took my father, KA3MTU (SK) and I on a bus trip with our local radio club. I didn’t sleep the entire bus trip! When I walked off that bus, I was speechless! I remember being able to find a carrying case for my new Radio Shack Model 100 that I used for RTTY and PACKET. And 2 years ago, I was able to introduce Hamvention to MY son, who is NOW a General class licensee and … He has my father’s old callsign – KA3MTU. He was…speechless! 73, Nathan Ciufo KA3MTT” (Caption: KA3MTT with son, KA3MTU and K1ZZ)

Other notable submissions were from twitter user @KimBrault, who discussed memories of son KD8YVJ meeting the hosts of HamNation and from twitter user @WE9876, who shared this entertaining story:

“A few years ago a friend of mine. (change the name to protect the innocent) Larry was talking to a famous ham one who has written several books and study guides. He was in a hurry because he was the speaker at a Hamvention seminar but my friend Larry would quit talking being the ham he is on the famous hams third attempt to get away and Larry wouldn’t give him a break. The famous ham looking and nodding at Larry processed to reach into his duffle bag pulled out a electric razor and proceeded to cut the stubble. He then said politely Larry I’ll be back in about an hour your more than welcome to stop back by and walked away. Larry looked at me and said iam glad I used his study guide he’s a nice guy. I wish I had a video recorder.” ~@WE9876

The next pre-Hamvention contest will solicit favorite photographs of Hamvention from twitter users. To enter the contest, post a photograph of past Hamvention experiences and tag the official Hamvention account, @hamvention between May 1st and May 6th. The winning entry will be selected based on quality, composition and reflection of the Hamvention experience. The winner will receive two complimentary tickets to Hamvention 2016.

The post Over $55,000 in Prizes to be Distributed at Hamvention 2015 appeared first on Hamvention.

]]>
Prizes to be awarded at the 2015 Dayton Hamvention have exceeded $55,000 and additional donations are still coming in according to Tom Holmes, prize committee chairman.  He said the total for major prizes thus far is $27,588 and smaller prizes at $27,502 almost match that amount. About 100 vendors have contributed prizes so far.

Several transceivers highlight the major prizes including an IC-7600 and ID 5100A from ICOM America, three TS-590G’s from Kenwood USA, a  FTDX 1220 and a FT 450D from Yaesu USA and a DX-SR9T from Alinco. The biggest prize in size is a US Tower HDX-555 55 foot crank up tower.

Holmes said that some of the hourly prizes may also be substantial and represent a broad spectrum of items of interest to hams.  Drawings are held hourly during Hamvention and winning numbers are posted at the Prize Booth in the Main Arena and on monitors throughout the complex.

Attendees can deposit their prize stubs at the Prize Booth. On Friday and Saturday only, attendees may also drop off prize stubs at the DARA Boy Scout Venturing Crew booth just inside the EAST HALL entrance. Tickets deposited at the East Hall booth by 15 minutes before the hour will be deposited in the main prize drum in time for the next hourly drawing. That service will not be available on Sunday.
